A striking sign for Paris La Défense Arena Nanterre

Paris La Défense Arena

A new beacon in the skyline of this district west of Paris

In early 2022, illuminated lettering 44m long and 3.5m high was placed on the roof of the Paris La Défense Arena, as an addition to the sign marking the main entrance to the building. This project, coordinated by Atelier ATHEM in close collaboration with Christian de Portzamparc, the architect who designed the arena, has made the venue recognisable from the Grande Arche de la Défense, guiding visitors to its events.

A sign as visible at night as it is in the day

This new sign, over 40m at its highest point, was designed to be just as visible at night as it is during the day, while at the same time fitting in with the brand’s visual identity. The letters in the logo appear black until the sun goes down, which is when the words Paris La Défense Arena light up in white thanks to the 2,100 LED modules that make up the sign.

A ‘low-impact’ creation

In line with the environmental performance objectives for the project, the decision was made to use 24V LED modules, which made it possible to reduce the estimated average energy consumption by up to 50% and increase the sign’s lifetime by over 60%.

A project coordinated from design to installation

Atelier ATHEM supported Paris La Défense Arena through the whole process, from the design of the sign to its installation. This included coordinating the regulatory and technical aspects.
